Data Coaching
I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of technology in motorsports. One of the most significant advancements in recent years is the rise of data coaching. This powerful tool can serve as an adjunct or even a replacement for traditional in-car coaching. Here’s why.
Understanding Data Coaching
Data coaching involves the use of telemetry data gathered from sensors on a car during a track session. This data, which can include everything from speed and RPM to brake pressure and steering angle, is then analyzed to provide insights into the driver’s performance.
The Benefits of Data Coaching
Objective Feedback
One of the key advantages of data coaching is its objectivity. Unlike in-car coaching, which relies on subjective observations, data coaching provides concrete, quantifiable information about every aspect of a driver’s performance. "The data doesn't lie" ... we can see things such as erratic control inputs, rapid brake release, and other critical information which can easily shave seconds off lap times.
Detailed Analysis
Data coaching allows for a level of detail that simply isn’t possible with traditional coaching methods. For example, it can reveal subtle inconsistencies in braking or steering that might be missed during in-car coaching.
Safety and Convenience
With data coaching, feedback can be provided after the track session, in a safe and comfortable environment. This eliminates the need for a coach to be present in the car, making it a great option for drivers who prefer to train alone.
Building a Data-Driven Training Program
Incorporating data coaching into your training program can be a game-changer. Here are some steps to get started:
- Invest in Telemetry Equipment: This is the easy part - I highly recommend the AiM suite of products. A simple AiM Solo 2 will be sufficient, but if you can spring for the Solo 2 DL, you will be able to pull other data from the OBD2 or CAN-bus to help further the diagnosis. Including an AiM SmartyCam adds another degree of diagnosis because we can see, in real-time, the position of the car on the track and what's going on with the steering wheel.
- Analyze the Data: Use software to analyze the collected data. If you invest in AiM equipment, the software is free. As a data coach, I will not only help you with your data assessment, but I can also help you get your computer setup to review your own data.
- Set Goals: Based on the analysis, we will set specific, measurable goals for each track session.
- Track Progress: Regularly review your data to track your progress towards your goals. I'm happy to have a Zoom session to review your data after a track day to help you set goals for your next event.
In conclusion, data coaching offers a modern, effective approach to driver training. By providing objective, detailed feedback, it can help drivers of all levels improve their performance on the track. As technology continues to advance, I am sure data coaching will become an increasingly important tool in motorsports training.
